Common Names: Elata Prickly Pear, Spiny Pear, Argentine Cactus
Appearance
A striking prickly pear cactus with broad, flat pads covered in long, needle-like spines and dense clusters of glochids.
Pads are bluish-green and grow in a stacked, upright form, eventually forming bushy, tree-like clusters.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Needs full sun to thrive; bright light encourages healthy growth and flowering.
Soil: Requires gritty, well-draining soil—ideal in cactus mix with sand or pumice.
Watering: Drought-tolerant—water thoroughly when soil is fully dry. Cut back in winter.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9–11. Can tolerate brief light frosts but prefers warm climates.
Humidity: Dry environments are best; avoid excess moisture.
Flower
Blooms with large, showy yellow flowers—sometimes with red centers—during late spring to early summer. Followed by colorful, edible fruits sometimes called "tunas."
Toxicity
Non-toxic but covered in sharp spines and glochids that can irritate skin—handle with thick gloves.
