Common Names: Eve’s Needle Cactus, Awl-Shaped Opuntia, Cane Cactus
Appearance
A fast-growing, upright cactus with cylindrical, green stems and distinctive awl-shaped leaves that emerge near the tips of new growth.
Covered with short spines and soft glochids, giving it a slightly fuzzy texture.
Can grow 10–15 feet tall in the ground, forming a tree-like, branching structure over time.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun to bright direct light; strong light promotes sturdy, upright growth.
Soil: Well-draining cactus or sandy soil mix.
Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: Thrives in USDA zones 9–11; protect from temperatures below 25°F (-4°C).
Humidity: Prefers dry, low-humidity conditions.
Flower
Produces tubular, pale pink to salmon flowers near the tips of mature stems in late spring to summer.
Flowering is more common on plants grown outdoors or in the ground.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to humans and pets, but spines and glochids can irritate skin. Handle with care.
