Appearance
A columnar barrel cactus with deep vertical ribs lined with striking red to reddish-pink spines.
Its spines start bright red when young and darken to deep burgundy as the cactus matures.
Can grow up to 3 feet (90 cm) tall and 18 inches (45 cm) wide over time.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun; bright light enhances its vivid red spines.
Soil: Well-draining sandy or cactus mix soil.
Watering: Drought-tolerant; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: Thrives in USDA zones 9-11; protect from temperatures below 25°F (-4°C).
Humidity: Prefers low humidity and dry conditions.
Flower
Produces bright yellow or orange flowers at the crown in late spring to summer, typically on mature plants.
Flowers are followed by small, barrel-shaped fruits.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to humans and pets, but the long, sharp spines can cause injury. Handle with caution!
