Common Names: Carrion Flower, Giant Starfish Flower, Zulu Giant
Appearance
A sprawling succulent with thick, fleshy, green stems that can grow several feet long.
Known for its massive, star-shaped flowers that can reach 12 inches in diameter, often mottled in reddish-brown tones.
Stems are triangular in cross-section and may trail or climb slightly if supported.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun; too much direct sun may scorch stems.
Soil: Well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: Thrives in USDA zones 9–11; protect from frost and temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
Humidity: Prefers moderate to low humidity; good airflow helps prevent rot.
Flower
Produces enormous, star-shaped flowers with a strong odor reminiscent of carrion, attracting pollinators like flies.
Flowers appear in summer and may last several days.
Toxicity
Mildly toxic if ingested. Spines are absent, but sap may irritate skin—handle carefully.
