Common Names: Old Man of the Andes, Woolly Torch Cactus, Andean Snow Cactus
Appearance
A striking columnar cactus covered in long, white, silky hairs that give it a “frosted” look, resembling an old man’s beard.
Stems are bluish-green beneath the hairs, with prominent ribs and short spines.
Can grow 6–10 feet tall in the ground, remaining smaller in containers.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun; gradual acclimation is recommended to prevent sunburn.
Soil: Well-draining cactus or sandy soil mix.
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: Thrives in USDA zones 8–11; tolerates brief drops to 25°F (-4°C) when dry.
Humidity: Prefers low humidity and dry conditions.
Flower
Produces striking crimson to pink flowers along the upper ribs of mature stems in late spring to summer.
Flowers emerge above the white “hair” and provide a vivid contrast against the frosted stems.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to humans and pets. Spines are sharp—handle with care.
Important Note
Each Oreocereus celsianus is naturally unique, with variations in hair length, stem color, and flowering. The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured but will be the same species and quality.
