Common Names: Paper Spine Cactus, Pine Cone Cactus
Appearance
Composed of segmented, club-shaped stems that resemble pine cones.
Spines are thin, papery, and can vary in length or be absent in some varieties.
Grows in a clumping, low-growing habit, reaching up to 12 inches (30 cm) in height.
Care & Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light encourages compact growth.
Soil: Requires well-draining, sandy, or cactus mix soil.
Watering: Drought-tolerant; water sparingly and allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
Temperature: Thrives in USDA zones 9-11; not frost-hardy and should be protected from temperatures below 25°F (-4°C).
Humidity: Prefers dry conditions and low humidity.
Flower
Produces large, cream or pale pink flowers in spring and summer.
Blooms emerge from the segmented joints of the plant.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to humans and pets, but the spines can cause irritation if handled.
Special Notes:
Fragile segments detach easily, which helps with natural propagation.
Perfect for xeriscaping or as a low-maintenance indoor succulent.
